Running Free, Happy New Year!

Running Free, 16×20 in oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas. Learn more about flower paintings here.

Last year I had a goal of painting much larger than I ever had before, and finished 3 48×60″ paintings. One thing that I’m really happy about with that project is that there was really room for the abstract quality of my work to come out – from all the way across the room.

I’ve wanted to paint larger paintings of flowers and other still life objects for some time, and have given it several starts over the years, but I was never satisfied enough to post one. I think I really needed to paint those big landscapes (and give a lot of thought to the big painting questions) before making a large still life that I’m satisfied with. But now I am, and here it is. What do you think?

NEW:  I will be making some sketches available

I’ve been painting some flowers set up in my window again… And in the process I pulled out some of the first flowers I painted. Here they are!

Above: Blossoms / 6×8 / oil on canvas / Visit Sketches Page

White blossoms from the back yard. I like the translucence that came through in the green soda bottle.

Below: Weeds / approx 9×9 / oil on canvas / Visit Sketches Page

These flowers look like black-eyed susans to me, and they are growing in huge numbers in empty lots around here. They’re very pretty.
