Oh my gosh, I love this one. I’d love to know what you think. I am just so excited about the colors and textures and the movement…

Hundred Year Storm, abstract painting #7

This painting started to look celestial right away, and I was thinking about that storm that’s been happening on Saturn for hundreds of years… Can you see a storm?  Click to Bid

While working on this painting and several paintings on paper, I got a much better grasp of how to manipulate this paint with acrylic paint pouring techniques, and I’m starting to see the relationship between the paint doing it’s thing and the painter directing what can be directed, and how direct application of paint can subtly work into something that looks organic…

I’m trying out a little setup in my studio for displaying the paintings, so that collectors can get a sense of how the painting would fit in a space. What do you think? Is it helpful?

You Hold Me Together, abstract painting #6 of 2017

I am continuing to experiment with acrylic painting techniques. I tried contrasting thick opaque paint with an underwash. And more significantly, the thick solid paint is contrasted with marbled crazy paint. It looks very organic to me, like a microscopic picture of something. But what? Click to Bid

Chasing My Tail, abstract painting #5 for 2017

A giant dragon flying through the air, then flipping to catch it’s own tail… Or maybe a sunset… It’s both.

I’m working through ideas about lines, and line quality. In art school I was kind of obsessed with varying my lines, especially when drawing the figure. With this painting I tried to make the edges interesting with small zig-zaging edges, and longer smooth edges… There’s also quite a difference in surface depth between the background colors and the pool of green above.

Layers of Warm, abstract painting #4 for 2017

OK, this one actually looks like it glows. I am loving that. I want to use the glowing effect for some landscapes next month! Click to Bid

One thing I think about a lot during my “regular” representational paintings is how thick the paint is… I want to have interesting areas where the paint is thin, and other areas where the paint is thick – so that there is ongoing interest for the paintings. With this painting I just experimented with that idea. Can you see all the layers? Do you like it or hate it?

I got my pouring medium in the mail today and am experimenting with it. It added some great shininess, plus I was able to do something pretty fun with using it to keep the paint wet in certain areas so I could wipe it back off with a brush for a sort of boutique look.

What I Feel, abstract painting #3 for 2017

I’m continuing to explore colors and textures and relationships. Specifically, how the green shape fits in with the violet shape around it… are they merged together or separate? Is one growing from the other, or diving into it? Sometimes it’s hard to tell where one thing ends and the next begins – especially in matters of the heart.

approx. 10×20 inches, acrylic on loose canvas. For the photo I took the painting outside on a piece of wood above the snow in the shade, and took a photo outside.  The photo is so much more accurate than the one I took right inside the glass door.

It’s -5 right now, but not cold enough to force me into shoes or a jacket! 🙂
