Portrait Painting Process
Steps in Hiring a Portrait Artist
It’s pretty simple. Make sure you enjoy the artist’s previous work and that you communicate well with them. Here are the steps my portrait collectors experience.
1) Look at Previous Portraits.
Before contacting me, look at my previous portraits. I work in a modern impressionist style that celebrates color and brush marks while capturing the essence of the person. If you enjoy my style, contact me for a free consultation.
2) Free Consultation.
Chat on the phone and share your hopes for a painting. No preparation necessary. I’ll ask you a few questions and we’ll both make sure that I am the right artist for your project.
I am blown away by this painting and we will treasure it forever. Thank you so very much for this.
If you choose to commission a portrait, a non-refundable deposit of 50% is due before the next step.
4) Photos and Sketches.
We meet, and I will paint a 2-3 hour color study and take photos to work from in the studio. For young children or people who cannot or do not wish to sit for the color study, I’ll take color notes to work from, or just work from my photos.
Composition Review – Optional
If you’d like, I’ll send you layout options to choose from, and make modifications as you request.
You will receive photo updates of your painting at a few stages in the process. You are welcome to visit the studio at any point to see their portrait in person, or hop on zoom with me to see the painting remotely.
I’ll send you images of the completed painting to approve before delivery.
Your painting will be delivered or carefully packaged and shipped as soon as it is dry to the touch. You now own an original, beautiful portrait.

Other sizes and options
Question: Will you work from my photo?
Answer: Yes, if absolutely necessary.
If you are within driving distance, we can meet for a photo-shoot. It is included in my pricing, and the paintings come out better when I am able to take a photo with painting in mind. Photos that are great as photos are not necessarily great for painting from.
If you are too far away to do a photo-shoot, or if there is another reason that a photo-shoot is not feasible, I will need written permission from the person who took the photos I work from.
Question: Can I make copies of the portrait you paint for my friends?
Answer: Artists maintain the copyright of their artwork even if the physical painting is sold. No reproductions can be made without written permission from the artist.
Question: Can I share the portrait on social media?
Answer: Yes! Please tag me. @jessierasche on instagram or @Jessie Rasche Art Studio on facebook.
Love it Guarantee
I put my heart and soul into all of my paintings and hope that you will love yours. If you are not happy with your portrait painting, let me know and we can talk about whether or not you would love it after some changes. I’ll either make changes or refund the payments you have made beyond the non-refundable deposit.
I want each collector to love their painting, and will do what I can to make sure that happens!
