Some days I just want to paint right outside, close to lunch and a bathroom, not losing any travel time….
Here’s a close-up of the texture on this one.

I love the windmills around South Dakota and Minnesota. There’s an area on the Western edge of Minnesota that I drive through on my way to my mom’s house that is pretty glorious. The windmills look like giant flowers all spread around.
I’ve got a new page for farm paintings. If you get a chance, check it out and let me know what you think.
I started this painting of the fields and prairie of South Dakota a few weeks ago. This is a scene that you see whenever traveling around the rural parts of this area of the Midwest, and these barns are really beautiful. I just finished it up yesterday. I’m really excited about the atmospheric effect on the fields and barns in the distance. Hope you enjoy it.

A few added yellow and orange pallet knife marks in the grass, so that the angular pallet knife marks in the wild trees in the background are echoed in the foreground, and this painting is complete.
I was overwhelmed by the response to this painting, with over 200 likes between the couple posts I put out about it, and some emailed comments too. Thank you so much!
As you may have noticed, growing the number of collectors and potential collectors on my newsletter list is my top business priority this year. If you have any suggestions about how to do that, please let me know!
The winner of the drawing last week hasn’t contacted me, so this week I’m giving away two prints! The winner can choose a print of either My Wild Heart or Girl Next Door, winner’s choice! I hope that shows my appreciation?

I’ve been trying to capture the amazing sky colors of South Dakota ever since we moved here, but have wiped most of my efforts. This painting was started about a month ago, and then yesterday I realized that I wanted my sky to be darker and more dramatic, and now I really like it. Hope you do too!
Merry Christmas! I’ve been working on this little painting for a while now. I really enjoy painting horses, and there’s a lovely connection between a horse and his person.
My December 20% off and free shipping studio sale is still happening until the end of the month!
In other art news, two paintings have been delivered their new homes! They’re both from the Brookings, SD series.
The working title of this painting was “50 shades of red” but I wasn’t sure how well that would go over… This is a beautiful farm that we pass every time we drive back to Brookings from Sioux Falls. After many photos of this farm I finally got some usable source pictures. The cows were outside the fence lounging around and looked more like pets than livestock – which I very much enjoyed seeing. I ended up naming this painting rainbow because of all the luscious reds, violets and orange colors in the middle and the blue and yellow top and bottom. It’s very primary. What do you think?

The spring colors of the fields in South Dakota are beautiful, and change constantly. Here’s a vista of cows on the slightly rolling hills around Brookings. I love the rainbow of rich colors in the fields around here. Velvety browns, oranges, and violet in the distance, and the sky could be anywhere between grey to vibrant blue to orange or purple. In this painting it’s a subtle blue grey.
