New Pear Painting

Not yet titled (suggestions welcome!), 8×10 in, oil on canvas, not yet available.

I’m so happy with how this turned out! I’m hanging onto it so I can reflect on what I like while I’m painting tomorrow…

And here’s my little setup. I’m using construction paper for some color in the background.

On a side note, you can see that everything is on a table. I set it up that way so that it would be easy to film for my workshops. But my goal for this year is to get green and healthy, and I feel healthier standing up! So I’ll be making a setup that’s at eye level while standing and adjusting my workshop filming stuff accordingly.

Have a great day!

Dancing Ladies, 5×5″ oil painting of violets, available.

I had no idea violets were so wild before painting these ladies. I am becoming very fond of them. This small painting is on mounted gessoboard with shallow wood sides, and is ready to either hang unframed or to frame.

I’ll be doing the drawing to give away a portrait this week, and it will be announced in my newsletter. Yay! Thank you so much to all my new subscribers and to everyone who shared!!! I really appreciate it!

Yellow Roses oil painting on canvas. Minnesota and South Dakota paintings.

I’ve changed around my still life setup and had a very nice painting time last night and this morning. I love these lovely yellow roses. This colorful painting is painted on gallery wrapped canvas with unpainted sides, and is ready to hang unframed.

Fruit painting: pears. Minnesota and South Dakota paintings.

My experiment of trying to use my round pointed portrait brushes as my main paint brushes for still lifes was really interesting. I disliked it! My pallet and tools for still lifes and landscapes has become completely different from my pallet and brushes for portraits (or the other way around).

So last week I set myself up for success with the backlit still life that I find so inspiring, and pulled out my square brushes. What do you think?

I thought it would be fun to show the setup this time. For this painting I used a new color combo, which I LOVE. For this project, at least. Paints from Utrecht.

Phthalo Blue (Utrecht)

Burnt Sienna (Winson & Newton)

Cad Yellow Light Pure (Utrecht)

Cad Red Medium Pure (Utrecht)

Titanium White (Utrecht)

Portrait artist paints still life: One In the Shade

This setup was a process of reduction. It started off with three garlic bulbs, then 2 garlic bulbs and a bunch of pieces, then no bulbs and a bunch of pieces… fewer and fewer and finally just these few pieces. I like that they all seem to be sitting on their bottoms and pointing in the same direction.

I’ve been wishing I could get those colorful shadows in my setups that you get from sunlight (and of course there’s no actual sunlight at 4am in the middle of the winter in South Dakota). And I remembered that I have a ‘daylight filter’. I’m going to try that out tomorrow.

Sexy Slice by artist Jessie Rasche / oil on canvas on board / 7×5 inches

This painting is “Sexy Slice” (feel free to suggest a better name!). It’s a painting of lemon slices – the top one is on the edge of a jar of drinking water, and those one’s below, looking up. Can you see the reflections of the other lemons on the jar?

This year is bringing a lot of new things. One minor change is a signature update. For my small paintings, I’ll be using my “R+squiggle” signature. What do you think?

NEW:  I will be making some sketches available

I’ve been painting some flowers set up in my window again… And in the process I pulled out some of the first flowers I painted. Here they are!

Above: Blossoms / 6×8 / oil on canvas / Visit Sketches Page

White blossoms from the back yard. I like the translucence that came through in the green soda bottle.

Below: Weeds / approx 9×9 / oil on canvas / Visit Sketches Page

These flowers look like black-eyed susans to me, and they are growing in huge numbers in empty lots around here. They’re very pretty.
