New Pear Painting

Not yet titled (suggestions welcome!), 8×10 in, oil on canvas, not yet available.

I’m so happy with how this turned out! I’m hanging onto it so I can reflect on what I like while I’m painting tomorrow…

And here’s my little setup. I’m using construction paper for some color in the background.

On a side note, you can see that everything is on a table. I set it up that way so that it would be easy to film for my workshops. But my goal for this year is to get green and healthy, and I feel healthier standing up! So I’ll be making a setup that’s at eye level while standing and adjusting my workshop filming stuff accordingly.

Have a great day!

“Spring Wildflowers” and art show announcement

Spring Wildflowers, 36 x 48 inches, oil on canvas

Very excited to be sending four brand new paintings down to the “Pop of Color” show at Southwind Art Gallery in Topeka, KS, opening on April 5th. I’m planning to be at the reception on April 5th. If you’re in that area, I hope to see you there.

This painting started off a while back and while I really liked the subtle, hazy quality to the distant area, I wasn’t happy with the foreground. But over the weekend, after working on several smaller paintings for this color show, I realized that even with the river, this painting could really benefit from a path in. I added in the colorful wildflower and green grass path, and now I think it’s pretty lovely. Sometimes you need something bright to really show off something subtle – or vice versa.

Cow painting (SOLD). South Dakota landscape paintings.

This is one of the lovely cows that lives to the North of Brookings. She was emerging after a bath in the river, and I really enjoyed the way her reflection mixed with grasses.

I’ve got a new page for farm paintings. If you get a chance, check it out and let me know what you think.

Portrait painting of mom and daughter. South Dakota artist.

Call or email if you’d like information about portraits. Bigger image.

Here is the finished portrait of my beautiful friends Erika and Seija. Thank you so much for sitting for me (for so long) for the sketches!

I’ve been working on this portrait for a while. It’s the first one where I specifically asked someone to sit in my studio for me, for a few hours of simple paintings to get their colors, and then photos to work from…

I love painting portraits, and I hope it shows in the painting.

Farm and pasture painting (available). Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.

I started this painting of the fields and prairie of South Dakota a few weeks ago. This is a scene that you see whenever traveling around the rural parts of this area of the Midwest, and these barns are really beautiful. I just finished it up yesterday. I’m really excited about the atmospheric effect on the fields and barns in the distance. Hope you enjoy it.

Dancing Ladies, 5×5″ oil painting of violets, available.

I had no idea violets were so wild before painting these ladies. I am becoming very fond of them. This small painting is on mounted gessoboard with shallow wood sides, and is ready to either hang unframed or to frame.

I’ll be doing the drawing to give away a portrait this week, and it will be announced in my newsletter. Yay! Thank you so much to all my new subscribers and to everyone who shared!!! I really appreciate it!

Fruit painting: pears. Minnesota and South Dakota paintings.

My experiment of trying to use my round pointed portrait brushes as my main paint brushes for still lifes was really interesting. I disliked it! My pallet and tools for still lifes and landscapes has become completely different from my pallet and brushes for portraits (or the other way around).

So last week I set myself up for success with the backlit still life that I find so inspiring, and pulled out my square brushes. What do you think?

The Pears with a View painting is being held for an upcoming show. But see all of my available paintings here:

Equestrian painting. Horse and man. Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.

Merry Christmas! I’ve been working on this little painting for a while now. I really enjoy painting horses, and there’s a lovely connection between a horse and his person.

My December 20% off and free shipping studio sale is still happening until the end of the month!

In other art news, two paintings have been delivered their new homes! They’re both from the Brookings, SD series.
