April Art News from Jessie Rasche

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind in the art studio – so there’s exciting stuff coming up!

I am so grateful to those little animals that spread pollen and keep our world alive. So It’s great to be involved in celebrating these creatures! I have three new pollinator paintings (as well as about 25 of my best other paintings) at ARG in Minnepolis & Edina.

And as soon as the pollinators paintings shipped out, I got to work on “Spring Wildflowers” (left).

I had started it a while back and loved the beautiful subtle atmospheric effect, but I set it aside to think about what it needed. When I heard about the “pop of color” show, I realized that this painting needed some vibrancy in the foreground. I added a layer of paint to the bottom 2/3 of the painting, adding in wildflowers and a lushness to the grasses, and brighter shadows on the cows – and now I love it!

This and the other three paintings for this show are of the neighborhood horses and cows, and I’m very excited about how they came out. These are fresh paintings, too. When I found out they couldn’t ship Friday, I un-boxed them to let them breathe and cure over the weekend… Now they’re on their way…

cow painting in progressWith those paintings finished and shipped, I’ve been working on my “Herd” series for my November solo show at Northern. It will be the largest series I’ve put together, and I’m working to make it great. Here’s an in-progress photo of the painting on my easel. And here’s a video about why I’m excited about the Herd series.

Thanks for your interest in my art journey!

Story & tip for artists – shipping is rough for those of us that paint in a lot of different sizes. But I just found something really nice. At Lowes, back in their loading area, they have boxes that they’ll give away. I needed to ship a huge painting, so I went back to ask if they had any big boxes I could have, and they said “sorry, we broke them all down. All we have are these flat pieces of cardboard.” And then proceeded to show me beautiful, unblemished, not even printed on, 4×8 foot pieces of cardboard – that they were going to just recycle! It felt like Christmas morning! I get a beautiful box, and I get to feel good about reusing paper products!! I absolutely recommend doing this if your paintings are big enough that you have to make your own boxes.
